"HEWAC intends to expand the deployment of broadband wireless access at colleges and universities throughout the world by providing both a physical and virtual platform for stakeholders to come together to network and share ideas."
Vision
The vision of the Higher Education Wireless Access Consortium (HEWAC) is to promote and enable the rapid deployment of wireless computing (e.g. Wi-Fi) and other wireless access technology at all higher education institutions worldwide.
HEWAC is dedicated to bringing wireless access technology to higher education in order to enhance the overall experience and learning environment for students, faculty and the surrounding community. By organizing colleges and universities around the world, HEWAC will help insure that higher education maximizes the full potential of wireless technology and its significant benefits.
Mission
HEWAC will expand the deployment of broadband wireless access at colleges and universities throughout the world by providing both a physical and virtual platform for stakeholders to come together to network and share ideas. In addition, we will provide a venue for promoting new and creative uses of this rapidly evolving technology, while helping set and promote policies that enhance personal and institutional security.
Goals
HEWAC has established specific goals in order to assist in carrying out its vision and mission. They are:
- Assist member colleges and universities to understand how they can utilize broadband wireless technology as an enabling tool to support their individual, educational and social missions.
- Create an institutional culture of cooperation and mutual benefits to ensure that broadband wireless services thrive within all higher education communities. HEWAC will facilitate partnerships and collaborations among higher education institutions, local communities, as well as business and industry.
- Provide significant cost savings for member institutions by pooling buying power in order to negotiate better terms from equipment vendors and service providers.
- Offer members a united voice on policy and regulatory matters that impact wireless access and computing at higher education institutions.
- Allocate certain funds raised from industry members and other sources to support the maintenance and development of wireless access and education, as well as the development of technological innovations on member campuses.
