Membership Services and Benefits

HEWAC will focus on the services and benefits it will provide to its members. These benefits will vary by degree based on the level of membership. The benefits and activities include:

  • E-Newsletter - A weekly brief/synopsis of valuable news and events in the wireless industry, with specific emphasis on higher education issues. Links will be provided to the full article/story for more in-depth information. The E-newsletters will also be archived and will be made available to members and other subscribers. In addition, the E-Newsletter will include limited and selective advertising on the front page only.
  • Publication Subscriptions - A bi-monthly or quarterly journal dedicated to higher education wireless access issues. This will provide a more in depth look at issues that are current and topical. Subjects such as technology assessments, product reviews, events, and personalities will be covered. A robust op/ed section will be provided so that the views of our membership will be heard and disseminated rapidly and effectively.
  • Online Bulletin Board Service - A self-regulated, but limited access bulletin board for members will be created. This area will serve as another vehicle for networking, idea exchange, and collaboration.
  • Conferences - Conferences for HEWAC members will be organized. The purpose of the conferences is to further solidify the relationships that will be created through the concept of "Connecting Learning Communities. The conferences will include speeches by luminaries, industry roundtables, product demos and other aspects. The HEWAC conferences will strive to make a difference by utilizing leading edge wireless technology to facilitate the conferences. In addition to providing a venue to demonstrate products in vendor booths, we will encourage participants to install their gear for the benefit of our attending members. The focus will not only be on hardware, but also on software, applications, and demonstration by member institutions on how the wireless technology helps them meet their educational and/or social missions.
  • Knowledge Platform - During HEWAC conferences, and throughout the year, we will organize seminars and other events designed for the dissemination and acquisition of knowledge specific to wireless access, computing, security and policies intended for the benefit of our members. In addition to these events, we will encourage demonstrations and training by HEWAC Industry Members and others, for the benefit of our institutional members. By using the latest available wireless and interactive technologies, we will aim to enhance the experience for attendees. We hope that many of these events will also be done in person, geography, time and cost permitting. A key aspect of this service will be the digital archiving and indexing of all seminars and demonstrations in our Knowledge Platform that will make them available for later use by members. Members will have access to the Knowledge Platform free of charge or at a minimal cost.
  • Product and Service Discounts - All member institutions will be part of the HEWAC buying pool, whereby it will strive to obtain agreements with vendors and service providers to make available their deepest discounts to member institutions. The larger the HEWAC membership, and the greater the commitment from members to make purchases under the HEWAC umbrella, greater leverage will exist to obtain higher discounts. This will be an ongoing effort by HEWAC to bring tangible and direct benefits to our member institutions.
  • Assessment Survey and Feedback - HEWAC will undertake a members survey on a regular basis to determine and understand key issues that are most relevant. The annual, broad based survey is intended to determine how HEWAC is meeting members' needs. However, we will also undertake other surveys on an ad hoc basis to gauge members' preferences on specific key legislative and regulatory issues that are important to our members. Survey results will be documented, summarized and made available to members - to ensure a feedback loop for the process.
